Why a coup in Guinea was felt around the world
A coup in mineral-rich Guinea has rattled markets and disrupted mining operations beyond West Africa. The coastal country boasts some of the world's largest reserves of many minerals, including bauxite and iron ore. The military's overthrow of Guinea's long-serving president, Alpha Conde, has added further pressure to already strained supply chains.

GUINEA CONAKRY: A ride through the country to it's capital // EPS 9
A ride through Guinea to it's capital Conakry - with offroad excursions, friendly locals and some adventurous transports!
Saying goodbye to places you fell in love with is the worst part of traveling. But every day offers aw well a new beginning, a new journey, a new adventure. Follow me from the grasslands of Fouta Djallon to Guineas capital Conakry and the border of Sierra Leone.
When we left Labé and the Fouta Djallon region we realized, that even finding an ATM can be quite an adventure in Guinea. After we were able to pay our petrol again we hit some small roads, met friendly locals and went on a night ride to Guinea's capital Conakry to apply for another visa.
//NOTE: videos were recorded before I had a Youtube Channel - initially used for my Instagram stories. That's the re...

After a rough few days in Sierra Leone, we have made it onwards to the next West African country of Guinea (Conakry).
It's been a wild 2.5 days here so far, from the challenging roads to the (once again) disgusting corruption and bribery that we had to deal with. But we made it, after 11 LONG hours of driving 150 miles, to the capital of Conakry.
Initially, we had a great time exploring the fish market at sunrise and then getting secret access inside the 2nd biggest mosque in sub Saharan Africa -- but then things quickly turned bad when thousands of policemen (armed with AK47s, helmets and bullet proof vests) stormed the streets in preparation for the riots which have ...

Army seizes power in Guinea, detains President Alpha Conde | DW News
Soldiers in the West African state of Guinea are holding longtime president Alpha Conde - and have declared a nationwide curfew. Members of the international community - including former colonial power France and the United States - have condemned the putsch. And the UN Secretary-General has called for the president's release.
It's been 24 hours of uncertainty and turmoil in Guinea since the coup began. It started in the Kaloum neighborhood of the capital Conakry, where the presidential palace is located.
Gunfire erupted and fighting broke out near the presidential palace in Conakry early Sunday morning. Special forces say they ousted President Alpha Conde and took control of the government.
The coup leaders say President Conde is unharmed. They released a video showing him in their custo...

If you are new here, welcome, be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so you don’t miss any of our videos.
The country was at the core of the 2014 Ebola outbreak which still has an impact on the socio-economic health of the country. Human rights in Guinea remain a controversial issue as in 2011 the United States government claimed that torture by security forces, and abuse of women and children were ongoing abuses of human rights. Given this small country has two other more prominent countries with similar names like it, it is often not the first country people are checking on, hence here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about Guinea.
1. Part of Several Empires
Guinea was once part of several great empires. The Sosso kingdom briefly flourished between 12th to 13th centuriesin the resulting void but the Mali Empire came to prominence when Soundiata Kéïta defeated the Sosso ruler Soumangourou Kanté at the Battle of Kirina in 1235. The Mali Empire was ruled by Mansa or Emperors, the most famous being Kankou Moussa, who made a famous hajj to Mecca in 1324. Shortly after his reign the Mali Empire began to decline and was ultimately supplanted by its vassal states in the 15th century. The most successful of these was the Songhai Empire, which expanded its power from about 1460 and eventually surpassed the Mali Empire in both territory and wealth. After the fall of the major West African empires, various kingdoms existed in what is now Guinea.
2. The Nation is Mostly Muslim
The population of Guinea is approximately 85% Muslim and 8% Christian, with 7% adhering to indigenous religious beliefs. Much of the population, both Muslim and Christian, also incorporate indigenous African beliefs into their outlook. The vast majority of Guinean Muslims are adherent to the Sunni tradition of Islam, of Maliki school of jurisprudence, influenced with Sufism. There is also a Shi'a community in Guinea while the Christian groups include Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Baptists, Seventh-day Adventists, and Evangelical groups. Jehovah's Witnesses are active in the country and recognized by the Government. There is a small Baháʼà Faith community. There are small numbers of Hindus, Buddhists, and traditional Chinese religious groups among the expatriate community.
3. There was Religious Strive in Guinea
Most African countries have huge religious and ethnic diversities and are mostly religious tolerant to one another but that was not the case of Guinea. There were three days of ethno-religious fighting in the city of Nzerekore in July 2013. Fighting between ethnic Kpelle, who are Christian or animist, and ethnic Konianke, who are Muslims and close to the larger Malinke ethnic group, left at least 54 dead. The dead included people who were killed with machetes and burned alive. The violence ended after the Guinea military imposed a curfew, and President Conde made a televised appeal for calm.
4. The Small Nation is One of the Most Diverse in Africa
The population of Guinea comprises about 24 ethnic groups and the Mandinka, also known as Mandingo comprise 24.8% of the population and are mostly found in eastern Guinea concentrated around the Kankan and Kissidougou prefectures. The Fulas or Fulani comprise 40.1% of the population and are mostly found in the Futa Djallon region. The Soussou, comprising 15.8% of the population, are predominantly in western areas around the capital Conakry, Forécariah, and Kindia. Smaller ethnic groups make up the remaining 18.3% of the population, including Kpelle, Kissi, Zialo, Toma and others. Approximately 10,000 non-Africans live in Guinea, predominantly Lebanese, French, and other Europeans.
5. The Official Language is French
The official language of Guinea is French but the most widely spoken language is Pulaar, which was spoken by almost 40% of the population. French, the official language of Guinea, is the main language of communication in schools, in government administration, and the media, but more than twenty-four indigenous languages are also spoken. The second most spoken language is the Mandinka language, which was spoken by about 30% of the population and the third most spoken language is the Susu language, which was spoken by about 18% of the population. Other languages spoken in Guinea include Koniaka, Kissi, Kpelle, and many more which are spoken by 23% of the population altogether.

That's the reason for the close ups of my face - they were recorded vertically. I still decided to use them - that's the authentic footage I have and I can't change that anymore. Remember: I just started out with filming and cutting - its a learning curve and far from perfect! If you mind seeing my nose hair every now and then, I can highly recommend you to skip this part of the journey and join again when I will publish my next trips after the country Benin with hopefully improved footage!
// Welcome to the journey! I am Lea, a journalist and author and I want to take you with me on a motorcycle overloading adventure to all the wild and beautiful places in the world!
//Join the first stage of my trip around Africa along the coast of Westafrica through 12 countries: Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin.
Time of the journey: November 2019 to Feburary 2020
// I circumnavigated the world solo from 2016-2017 and now I am going to all other places I have not seen yet. Now on the channel: my motorcycle trip around africa/ the first stage of the journey through westafrica.

Initially, we had a great time exploring the fish market at sunrise and then getting secret access inside the 2nd biggest mosque in sub Saharan Africa -- but then things quickly turned bad when thousands of policemen (armed with AK47s, helmets and bullet proof vests) stormed the streets in preparation for the riots which have been destroying the city.
We quickly ran (literally) back to our hotel and called it a day. We didn't leave the hotel anytime afterwards.
This region of the world is tough to travel across, especially in your own vehicle. At each of the dozens and dozens of police checkpoints, we are always pulled over to show our car papers/insurance, and even after we do correctly, the corrupt police will find ANY reason to pick on us (often times, making up some random law) until we pay them off. It makes me sad.
BUT I HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS (in case you missed yesterday's video)! THE SIERRA LEONE GOVERNMENT SAW MY VIDEO ABOUT US GETTING SCAMMED AND THEY WENT TO THE BORDER TO ARREST THE 3 GUYS AND NOW THEY ARE IN PRISON! One step closer to making this region a safer place to visit for everyone.

They released a video showing him in their custody. His current location is unknown.
Conde became Guinea's first democratically elected leader in 2010. But to stay in power, he changed the constitution, which limited his time in power, to allow himself a third term in office.
People took to the streets of Conakry to celebrate the military takeover.
The international community is condemning the coup. But it's still unclear how Guinea's political elite will react to Conde's ousting. The mutineers have summoned the current ministers to meet with them, and said a refusal to attend will be considered rebellion.

GUINEA - Guinea - | The Republic of Guinea | Guinea Country
Guinea officially the Republic of Guinea is a west-coastal country in West Africa. Formerly known as French Guinea, the modern country is sometimes referred to as Guinea-Conakry to distinguish it from other countries with "Guinea" in the name and the eponymous region, such as Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. Guinea has a population of 12.4 million and an area of 245,857 square kilometers (94,926 sq mi). The sovereign state of Guinea is a republic with a president who is directly elected by the people; this position is both head of state and head of government. The unicameral Guinean National Assembly is the legislative body of the country, and its members are also directly elected by the people. The judicial branch is led by the Guinea Supreme Court, the highest and final court of appe...

GUINEA CONAKRY: Crashs in the FOUTA DJALLON region & Kambadaga waterfalls // EPS. 8
Crashs, waterfalls, and challenging roads: Welcome to the Fouta Djallon region in Guinea - one of my favorite places on this trip so far!
Each country I ever visited I fell in love with – even if it was only for a short minute. But Guinea-Conakry made me fall in love each single second I stayed. Why? Because of its challenges. But also because of its breathtaking beauty, and its untouched nature.
After crossing the border of Guinea-Bissau to Guinea-Conakry at the border post Fulamory, there was already the first surprise waiting: a hand-pulled ferry that brought us over the river. Little did we know that the real challenges were still waiting: A very bad, sandy road - which ended up in two crashs.
The next days we headed torwards Labé, the capital of the region Fouta Djallon. The highl...

To Conakry, Guinea and Beyond... ok, just to Conakry
Today I leave the town of Labe in the High Guinea region and move on to the capital of Guinea: Conakry. I'm expecting Conakry to be a bit of a challenge. The laws about taking photos in the city are pretty strict and the military/police are meant to be some of the most corrupt in the world.
On this edition, I simple show up to town, but over the next couple days I deal with all sorts of problems in Conakry.

The judicial branch is led by the Guinea Supreme Court, the highest and final court of appeal in the country. Guinea is a predominantly Islamic country, with Muslims representing 85 percent of the population. Guinea's people belong to twenty-four ethnic groups. French, the official language of Guinea, is the main language of communication in schools, in government administration, and the media, but more than twenty-four indigenous languages are also spoken. Guinea's economy is largely dependent on agriculture and mineral production. It is the world's second-largest producer of bauxite and has rich deposits of diamonds and gold. The country was at the core of the 2014 Ebola outbreak. Human rights in Guinea remain a controversial issue. In 2011 the United States government claimed that torture by security forces, and abuse of women and children (e.g. female genital mutilation) were ongoing abuses of human rights.

The highlands of Fouta Djallon are often called the watertower - or in French: 'le chateau d'eau' , of West Africa. Sometimes people as well refer to the region as the 'Switzerland of West Africa'. We found out why on a excursion to Kambadaga waterfalls.
Join the journey in through the Fouta Djallon region of Guinea and find out, how it feels to ride in 40+ degrees, on sandy roads or when standing on a majestic waterfall!
//NOTE: videos were recorded before I had a Youtube Channel - initially used for my Instagram stories.

Guinea (/ˈɡɪni/ (audio speaker iconlisten)), officially the Republic of Guinea (French: République de Guinée), is a coastal country in West Africa. Guinea borders the
Atlantic Ocean to the west, Guinea-Bissau to the northwest, Senegal to the north, Mali to the northeast, Cote d'Ivoire to the southeast, and Sierra Leone and Liberia to the south. Formerly known as French Guinea (French: Guinée française), the modern country is sometimes referred to as Guinea-Conakry after its capital Conakry, to distinguish it from other territories in the eponymous region such as Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. Guinea has a population of 12.4 million and an area of 245,857 square kilometres (94,926 sq mi).
Guinea achieved independence from France in 1958.[14] It has a long history of military coups d'état In 2010, after decades of authoritarian rule, Guinea held its first democratic election. Although Guinea continued to hold multi-party elections, the country continued to face ethnic conflicts, widespread corruption, and abuses by military and police.[19][20] Human rights in Guinea remain a controversial issue. In 2011, the United States government claimed that torture by security forces and abuse of women and children (including female genital mutilation) were ongoing human rights issues. In 2021, a military faction overthrew president Alpha Condé and suspended the constitution.
Guinea is a predominantly Islamic country, with Muslims representing 85 per cent of the population. Guinea's people belong to twenty-four ethnic groups. The country is divided into four geographic regions: Maritime Guinea on the low-lying Atlantic coast, the Fouta Djallon or Middle Guinea highlands, the Upper Guinea savanna region in the northeast, and the Guinée forestière region of tropical forests. French, the official language of Guinea, is the main language of communication in schools, in government administration, and the media, but more than twenty-four indigenous languages are also spoken. The largest are by far Susu, Pular, and Maninka, which dominate respectively in Maritime Guinea, Fouta Djallon, and Upper Guinea, while Guinée forestière is ethnolinguistically diverse.
Guinea's economy is largely dependent on agriculture and mineral production. It is the world's second largest producer of bauxite, and has rich deposits of diamonds and gold. The country was at the core of the 2014 Ebola outbreak. Guinea shares a border with Guinea-Bissau to the north-west, Senegal to the north, Mali to the north-east, Ivory Coast to the east, Sierra Leone to the south-west and Liberia to the south. The nation forms a crescent as it curves from its southeast region to the north and west, to its northwest border with Guinea-Bissau and southwestern coast on the Atlantic Ocean. The sources of the Niger River, the Gambia River, and the Senegal River are all found in the Guinea Highlands.
At 245,857 km2 (94,926 sq mi), Guinea is roughly the size of the United Kingdom. There are 320 km (200 mi) of coastline and a total land border of 3,400 km (2,100 mi). It lies mostly between latitudes 7° and 13°N, and longitudes 7° and 15°W, with a small area that is west of 15°.
Guinea map of Köppen climate classification
Guinea is divided into four main regions: Maritime Guinea, also known as Lower Guinea or the Basse-Coté lowlands, populated mainly by the Susu ethnic group; the cooler, mountainous Fouta Djallon that run roughly north–south through the middle of the country, populated by Fulas; the Sahelian Haute-Guinea to the northeast, populated by Malinké; and the forested jungle regions in the southeast, with several ethnic groups. Guinea's mountains are the source for the Niger, the Gambia, and Senegal Rivers, as well as the numerous rivers flowing to the sea on the west side of the range in Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast.
The highest point in Guinea is Mount Nimba at 1,752 m (5,748 ft). Although the Guinean and Ivorian sides of the Nimba Massif are a UNESCO Strict Nature Reserve, the portion of the so-called Guinean Backbone continues into Liberia, where it has been mined for decades; the damage is quite evident in the Nzérékoré Region at 7°32′17″N 8°29′50″W.
Guinea is home to five ecoregions: Guinean montane forests, Western Guinean lowland forests, Guinean forest-savanna mosaic, West Sudanian savanna, and Guinean mangroves.[85] It had a 2019 Forest Landscape Integrity Index mean score of 4.9/10, ranking it 114th globally out of 172 countries.[ mapa de Guinea Africa

Guinea (British coin)
The guinea is a coin of approximately one quarter ounce of gold that was minted in the Kingdom of England and later in the Kingdom of Great Britain and the United Kingdom between 1663 and 1814. It was the first English machine-struck gold coin, originally worth one pound sterling, equal to twenty shillings; but rises in the price of gold relative to silver caused the value of the guinea to increase, at times to as high as thirty shillings; from 1717 until 1816, its value was officially fixed at twenty-one shillings. Following that, Great Britain adopted the gold standard and guinea became a colloquial or specialised term.
The name came from the Guinea region in West Africa, where much of the gold used to make the coins originated. Although no longer circulated, the term guinea survives in ...

Although no longer circulated, the term guinea survives in some circles, notably horse racing, and in the sale of rams, to mean an amount of one pound and one shilling (21 shillings) or one pound and five pence in decimalised currency. The name also forms the basis for the Arabic word for the Egyptian pound الجنيه el-Genēh / el-Geni, as a sum of 100 Qirsh (i.e., one pound) was worth approximately 21 shillings at the end of the 19th century.
